Republicans distanced themselves from President Trump over his failure to condemn white supremacy at the debate, as he faced a torrent of criticism.

The president scrambled to defend himself on Wednesday afternoon, falsely claiming that he had “always denounced any form” of white supremacy. And after saying at the debate that the Proud Boys, a far-right group that has endorsed violence, should “stand by,” Mr. Trump asserted on Wednesday that they didn’t even know who the group is.

Clare Bronfman, a Seagram's heir, was sentenced to more than 6 years in prison for her role in Nxivm, a cultlike group that coerced women into sex.

Ms. Bronfman was the first defendant to be sentenced in the Nxivm investigation, which has shattered the sunny facade of an organization that purported to help people achieve their personal goals through “executive success” workshops.

Its leader, Keith Raniere, was convicted at trial in June 2019 of racketeering, sex trafficking, fraud and other crimes.
